Abstract: Given a sequence of numbers, one may form a Dirichlet series. 

The structure of those numbers is detected by the analytical properties

of the Dirichlet series. In this lecture, I will explain how the theory of 

automorphic forms and the Langlands program get deeply involved 

in the  investigation of such a classical problem.
