Abstract: We investigate the blow-up mechanism of solutions to a class of quasilinear equations arising from shallow water waves. The dynamics of the blow-up quantity along the characteristics involves the interaction between the solution and its gradient. We use a refined analysis on the evolution of certain combinations of the solution and its gradient to derive  some exact blow-up criteria. These criteria rely strongly on the local structure of the solution. This is a joint work with Fei Guo, Yue Liu, Changzheng Qu, and Shuanghu Zhang.
