Abstract:Lie group is called a linear Lie goup if it can be realized as a closed subgoup of some GL(n,R).Linear Lie goups contain two important classes of discrete subgoup:arithmetic subgroups and thin subgroups.Locally symmetric spaces associated with arithmetic subgroups have finite voulme,while locally symmetric spaces associated with thin subgoups have infinite volume.The former is classical and has been studied extensively,while the latter has attracted a lot of attention only recently.We will discuss some similarily and differences between them from the perspectives of geometry and topolpgy,and also discuss some open problems,especially for the latter.
