Abstract: Group actions in algebraic geometry are defined analogously to other fields. Constructing quotients under such actions is, however, a non-trivial problem. The development of many modern ideas in algebraic geometry has been fueled by this issue. Geometric Invariant Theory (or GIT for short) is a classically-flavored method developed by David Mumford in the 1960s building on earlier work of Hilbert. We will motivate GIT by several instructive examples and then explain its main principles. Time permitting, we will touch on an important application of GIT -- constructions of moduli spaces.
