Title: On shadows and the Volume Conjecture, part I,

Abstract: We will review the definition of shadow of a link in a
3-manifold and some results relating the combinatorics of a shadow
to the geometric properties of the complement of the link. Then,
we will recall how to express by means of ``shadow state-sums" the
colored Jones polynomials (for links in the 3-sphere) and how to
extend it to links in connected sums of S^2\times S^1. We will
then relate these shadow state sums to the volume conjecture and
sketch the proof of the conjecture for an infinite family of
hyperbolic links.
