Introduction:
This conference focuses on some recent developments on 3-manifold
theory. Recent work of Perelmann and Hamilton on Thurston's
geometrizaton conjecture has changed the study of 3-manifolds. This
event can be considered as the 3-dimensional counterpart of
Poincare-Koebe's uniformization theory for Riemann surfaces. From
this point of view, one should consider the resolution of the
geometrization conjecture as the beginning of a new research
activities for 3-manifolds. Just like in the theory of Riemann
surfaces, the surging of Teichmuller theory has completely change
the landerscape of Riemann surfaces, the future direction of
3-manifolds should be on hyperbolic 3-manifolds. There are many
important problems in the field. The topics to be discussed in the
conference include: the volume conjecture, angle structure and
hyperbolic 3-manifolds, and angle structures and volume
optimization.
