Center of Mathematical Sciences at Zhejiang University established in August 2002. It is an institution facing the whole country and abroad and directly subordinate to Zhejiang University. The world famous mathematician, Field medalist, member of National Academy of Sciences, Higgins Professor (Chair Professor) of Harvard University, Mr. Shing-Tung Yau is appointed as the center director. For the establishment of the Center Mr.Y.C.Tang(Tang's Foundation) gives great support both spiritually and financially. The center is a mathematical research center with world reputation where have the first class research fellows, workshops, academic environment and facilities. In August, 2002, String Thoery International Conference had been held successfully in CMS. On the conference, President Jiang Zemin had met the world famous mathematicians S. Hawking, Shing-Tung Yau and E. Witten cordially in Beijing. In 2003 the world famous mathematician as academician Chaohao Gu, academician Yuan Wang, academician Zhongci Shi, professor Shen Gong, professor of N.Y. University, Cheung Kong Chair Professor of Zhejiang University Fanghua Lin, professor of USTHK, Cheung Kong Chair Professor of Zhejiang University Jianshu Li, academician of TWAS, deputy director of Science and Technology Committee of Education Ministry professor Weiping Zhang, chief of Morningside Center of Mathematics professor Xiangyu Zhou, director of the math department of Cambridge University professor G. Grimmett, professor of UCLA, Tony F. Chan, professor of Michigan University, senior professor of CMS Lizhen Ji, professor of University of Colorado Siye Wu and professor of National Tsing Hua University Frank Kwang-Ming Hwang have worked in CMS successively. Recently, executive director of CMS, Guangbiao professor Kefeng Liu have successfully proved the world famous Vafa Conjecture. This achievement draws close attention by the international colleagues and will be issued on the international publication soon.
Under the leadership of director Shing-Tung Yau, CMS takes organizing high-leveled academic activities, doing world first-class original innovative research and training young math talents as its main task with the goal to establish a research center of first class in the world.
